Term 4

Week 4
Students are working on their Scoresby Farm Project. This project is done in groups of 3 or 4. It is entirely student driven with students assigning their own homework and tasks for one another. Students have to make their own farm buying property, crops, infrastructure and animals. The animals are to be bought at auction where students will have to out bid other groups. This project will be continuing over the next few weeks.

Week 3
We are finishing off our algebra topic. Monday we looked at checking our solutions and completed 6D questions 1, 2, 6, 7 and 9. On Tuesday we will be looking at solving worded problems and complete 6E questions 1, 2, 3, 4, 8 and 10. Students will be sitting a test next Monday and have been told to complete the chapter review questions at the end of chapter 6.

Week 2
We are continuing on with writing equations. On Monday students were asked to complete 6C questions 1 - 7. Tuesday students are asked to complete 6D on checking solutions. They are asked to complete questions 1, 2, 3 and 6. If they finished that in class they were to go onto questions 7 and 9.

Week 1
This week we started a new topic on writing equations. On Monday we looked at how to use a pronumeral (symbol or letter) in place of an unknown number. We also examined inverse operations (using the opposite sign) and how to write flow charts to order our operations. The students were set questions 1, 2, 3 and 6 from 6A to complete some in class and some at home.
On Tuesday we looked at building up an expression using flow charts. The class worked really well on this and had to finish 3C questions 1 - 3 for homework.
Thursday is our problem solving day. We complete tasks from our task centre asking students to justify why their answers are correct. Students need to show full working out for any task they completed.

Term 3
We have started term 3 by looking at Exponential Functions (powers of) and Divisibility Rules

Friday 18th September.
It is the end of term 3 and students have worked fantastically over the last 3 weeks, nearly everyone has been completing their homework. As a reward there is no holiday homework for maths and everyone should be proud of their efforts this term.
Have a great holiday.

Tuesday September 8
Today students will use the skills learnt yesterday to do a scale diagram of the double classroom. This needs to be completed for homework and is due on Monday. Students have been given an A3 sheet of paper to complete this task (which they need to keep safe!).

Monday September 7
Today we began the unit on Maps, Networks and Cartesian planes. e introduced scales and ratios, went through a worked example on the board, and then students needed to complete Ex12A Q1 and 2. Many students did not complete this, and if so this needs to be finished off for homework. There is no specific homework set this lesson.

Monday August 31st
Today we are doing revision for the students capacity and volume test which is tomorrow (students were told to put this in their planner last week). They will be given a revision worksheet to work on as well as completing a cheat sheet, which is a page of notes to assist them with formulas during the test.

Thursday August 20th
Today we looked at capacity and continued on with volume. Students were set questions from exercise 8I Q 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 15. Most finished up to question 5 in class. Lately I have been disappointed with students either not completing homework or not showing their working out and checking their answers. At the moment we are on a big crack down in class on students not showing working out as this is essential in their practice of mathematics. When helping students with their homework please ensure they are showing all the steps they have used to solve a problem and not just the final answer.
A reminder that the interior decorating project is due on Thursday.

Monday and Tuesday 18th August
The past two days we have looked at Volume. Students received their tests back and we discussed them. All students need to ensure they are showing working out for every question as well as displaying correct units (ie: cm, m, km) as this let a lot of students down in their test.
The homework questions set over the past two days are 8G questions 1, 2 and 7 as well as 8H question 1-5. I will be checking homework on Thursday.
Students also received a project called interior decorating that is due in on the 27th August.

Thursday Augst 6th
We are halfway through our topic on Area and volume and we are going to have a test on what we have covered so far. This test is going to be on Tuesday 11th August. The test is on conversions of length and area, perimeter, area of rectangles and area of triangles. This topic is covered in chapters 7 and 8 of their text book. For revision I have asked students to complete the following chapter review questions.
Page 288 - Questions 5, 10, 11 and 13
Page 336 - Questions 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 13, 14
Students are also allowed a one page "cheat sheet" to assist them in doing their test, this is one page of notes that can help them. It can include formula's, drawings, examples or anything they think might help.

Thursday 30th July
Today we looked at area. Students are to ensure they are up to date with their work by Monday 3rd August, they should ensure they have completed exercise 8C questions 1, 2, 4 and two worded questions of their choice. Some students are doing a great job and some are starting to let their homework slide.

Monday July 20th - Friday July 24th
On Monday we are going to finish up on divisibility and exponential functions. Students are going to make factor trees that involve writing the final answer as a sum of the prime numbers. Students will be asked to finish this for homework if it is not completed in class and hand it back on Thursday July 23rd.
On Tuesday we start our new topic on Measurement, we will look at converting measurements, perimeter, area and volume. Students will be asked to do work book questions as well as mini assignments in class.
On the Friday we started looking at conversion of units. Students were set Exercise 7C questions 1 -3 (just the left hand side) and they had to pick two worded questions from the exercise to complete. Most were almost finished, this task was asked to be completed before their next maths class.

Monday 20th July
Students completed factor trees, if these were not completed in class they were asked to finish them for homework due on Thursday 23rd July.

Thursday July 16th (due on Monday July 20th)
Students are to complete 2G Questions 1-6 using the divisibility rules from their text book which we have practiced in class.
